Maó city has an ancient story originated on a promontory on the southern shore of the harbor. The first population centers occupy an small space surrounded by ports and the cliffs of Baixamar, Freginal and Clota. During the Middle Ages the town was closed in the several walled areas, but, later, it found areas to expand and grow beyond the walls. Finally, it became the capital of the island, set up the modern urban core. A stroll through the streets of Maó shows us all the wealth of historical legacy accumulated over the centuries of existence, and the different architectures and monuments reveal traces of the many peoples who have passed through the island.
